Tuesday-Newsday #196

Note: Due to technical difficulties and schedule conflict, Tuesday-Newsday is a day late. Sorry about that. Here at last is this week's post...

Time for Tuesday-Newsday! This week focus is on Cancer Pain. The Featured Blog Posts this week are all connected to parenting when you have chronic pain.

Let Me Know: If you’d like me to watch for articles on your pain condition, just drop me a note in the comments section below.

WARNING:  My goal is to provide the most up-to-date news I can, which you can then take to your personal doctor and debate the merits of before you try it. I do not endorse any of the docs, treatments, info, and meds in anything I post nor can I guarantee they are all effective, especially not for everyone. As is the case with any health info, ALWAYS get your doctor's opinion first!

  1. picnicwithants.com,
I'm sorry to hear about all the difficult health issues which you are dealing with. There are many options for managing chronic pain, from medicinal to therapeutic to alternative, and new things are coming up all the time.

Trying to put together a good pain regimen for yourself will take a lot of trial and error, and require taking risks that may be temporarily uncomfortable or difficult. I myself suffered a bad medication reaction about 2 weeks ago when I was instructed to increase by 1/4 of a pill -- who knew so little medicine could cause so much trouble? I'm still getting back to my "normal" after that nasty reaction. I took the risk of upsetting my life by trying that Rx increase and it didn't work - it turned my life upside down. But that medication has actually been amazingly helpful up to then; I simply found out what my dosage limit is and now I know any other changes in my pain regimen will focus on a different facet.

Other than medications, are you exploring any alternative treatments to see if they work for you such as massage, aqua therapy, acupuncture, biofeedback, TENS, yoga, meditation, etc.? I have found the first two to be very helpful for me

I also had a physical therapist inspect my home to be sure that my environment does not contribute to my pain. She evaluated my chair, desk, computer, bed, shower, kitchen, car... everything! Sometimes we overlook areas and items we most often use that can add to our pain. Just getting a good pair of orthotics for my shoes to correct my very slight difference in leg length made a difference in my hip/lower back pain. Sometimes very small things like that can really surprise you.

Have you also explored options like Cefaly for your migraines, or a spinal stimulator, or an intrathecal pump? There are a lot of devices and other therapeutic things, such as just regular old physical therapy which might yield helpful results. My mother tried a lot of things for her severe migraines, including growing her own feverfew plants, drying the leaves, and making her own capsules; it helped her for a few years but eventually stopped working. I'm not trying to recommend that you try any of these options or anything else out there on the internet -- UNLESS you check it out FIRST with your DOCTOR. I don't want to misled anyone into harm.

To look at more posts that talk more about what I've done for pain an d other aspects than just straight news articles about painful conditions, look at the first few years' worth of posts on this blogsite. Here are two that you might find useful:

I wish you luck in your journey to find pain relief, and if you have any specific questions I will do my best to answer them. Know that you are not alone in your struggle.

    Blessings,
    ~Shannon
